Suddenly Shipping Scotty and Uhura

Listen, when the Scotty/Uhura relationship was revealed in The Final Frontier, I was annoyed. As far I was concerned, that Uhura was supposed to end up with Spock, not randomly thrown with Montgomery Scott, who was destined to suddenly disappear and then reappear years later in the TNG episode "Relics" (like seriously, was there a novel about this? Were he and Uhura still together, and if so, how did she handle the loss?).

But then...this week's SNW Season 2 finale revealed 29-year-old Scottish actor Martin Quinn as the new Scotty and it got me thinking.

I can see this. As shocking as it is (to me), I can actually see this. In my previous post, I stated wanting someone age appropriate for Uhura (whose Celia Rose Gooding is currently 23), and since this relationship is canon, it could work. Uhura's a linguistics prodigy, and Scotty's an engineering genius.

Combined they're basically a Starfleet power couple (Imagine if one of their descendants pops up on Star Trek: Legacy. "Ensign Kamaria Scott" has a ring to it, am I right? I'd love to see a young, chipper Black Scottish actress skipping the halls of a starship).

Romantically, there's a lot to work with here, especially since despite their intelligence and accomplishments, they still have the chaos of youth; there's potential for some real humor here. I could see them connecting over being some of the smartest people on the Enterprise, bonding over Scottish and Kenyan cultures, hilariously rescuing each other from danger, and going on shore leave together to some actual strange new world...the possibilities are endless.

Unfortunately, I don't see this happening on The Nurse Chapel Show, not when we only get ten episodes a season, and certainly not when even the Captain and First Officer are repeatedly sidelined on their own vessel (like Picard and Riker would never, lol).

But it's something for fic writers to think about. *shrug*
